Prepare your trek
Everything you need to know to hike safely in the High Atlas.
Recommended gear
- Waterproof mid/high hiking boots
- Layered clothing (base, fleece, down jacket)
- Windbreaker and hiking pants
- Gloves, beanie, hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen and lip balm SPF 30+
- Sleeping bag comfort -5°C for refuge nights
- Small personal first-aid kit (plasters, painkillers, disinfectant)
- Water bottle or hydration bladder (2 L minimum)
Fitness level
- Walk regularly in the weeks before the trek
- Choose outings with elevation gain
- Carry a 5-8 kg backpack to get used to the weight
- For Toubkal: be able to hike 6-8 hours with 1,000 m elevation gain
Altitude and acclimatization
- Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty
- Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine in the first days
- Ascend gradually: our programs include acclimatization nights
- Report any discomfort to the guide immediately (headache, nausea)
Safety and insurance
- Travel insurance covering hiking and evacuation is recommended
- Check the maximum altitude covered by your insurance
- Always follow the guide's instructions
- Never go alone in the mountains without experience
Weather by season
- Spring/autumn: mild weather, possible afternoon showers
- Summer: hot at low altitude, cool at the summit
- Winter: snow above 2,500 m, freezing temperatures on the summit
- Weather can change quickly: always bring full gear
Respect and local culture
- Respect Berber customs and ask before photographing people
- Do not leave any waste on the trails
- Bring sweets or small gifts for village children (optional)
- Learn a few words in Tamazight: "azul" (hello), "tanmirt" (thank you)
